COVID-19 Protocols for 2022-23 School Year

DHEC has released the latest requirements related to COVID-19 and protocols for the 2022-23 school year. 

• DHEC now requires school districts to report when a cohort (meaning a class, group or team) of more than 5 individuals (students and/or staff) has 20% or more positive cases within 72 hours. 
• GCS is required to track positive cases, and if a cohort that your student participates in (such as a class, team or club) has 20% or more positive cases within 72 hours, GCS will notify DHEC. While not required by DHEC, schools will provide additional notification to families of students that are in a cohort with 20% of more positive cases. 
• The following DHEC requirements will continue from last year:
  • If your child is exhibiting any of the following symptoms, with or without fever (100.4 or greater), they must be excluded from school and may return with a negative COVID test OR a doctor’s note clearing return with no further exclusion.
    • New/worsening cough
    • Shortness of breath/difficulty breathing
    • New loss of taste and smell
  • If your child tests positive for COVID, you must report it to the school, and your child must isolate for 5 days. 
    • If your child tests positive for COVID-19, they may return to school activities, as outlined in the provided guidance, on Day 6 as long as the following DHEC requirements are met:
      • Symptoms are significantly improving and no fever in the past 24 hours without using fever-reducing medication
      • Mask must be worn days 6 through 10
      • Please note that while students may return to in-person school on day #6 as long as DHEC requirements are met, students are not eligible to participate in athletics until after Day 10.

All of this information is being communicated with students’ families through Parent Backpack and School Messenger.

DHEC ha publicado los últimos requisitos y protocolos relacionados con COVID-19 para el año escolar 2022-23.

• DHEC ahora requiere que los distritos escolares informen cuando una cohorte (es decir, una clase, grupo o equipo) de más de 5 personas (estudiantes y/o personal) tiene un 20% o más de casos positivos dentro de las 72 horas.
• Se requiere que GCS rastree los casos positivos, y si una cohorte en la que participa su estudiante (como una clase, equipo o club) tiene un 20% o más de casos positivos dentro de las 72 horas, GCS notificará a DHEC. Si bien DHEC no lo exige, las escuelas proporcionarán una notificación adicional a las familias de los estudiantes que se encuentran en una cohorte con un 20 % de más casos positivos.
• Los siguientes requisitos de DHEC del año pasado continuarán:
  • Si su hijo presenta alguno de los siguientes síntomas, con o sin fiebre (100.4 o más), debe ser excluido de la escuela y puede regresar con una prueba de COVID negativa O una nota del médico que acredite el regreso sin más exclusión.
    • Tos nueva o que empeora
    • Falta de aire/dificultad para respirar
    • Nueva pérdida del gusto y el olfato.
  • Si su hijo da positivo para COVID, debe informarlo a la escuela y su hijo debe aislarse durante 5 días.
    • Si su hijo da positivo para COVID-19, puede regresar a las actividades escolares, como se describe en la guía proporcionada, el día 6, siempre y cuando se cumplan los siguientes requisitos de DHEC:
      • Los síntomas están mejorando significativamente y sin fiebre en las últimas 24 horas sin usar medicamentos para reducir la fiebre
      • La máscara debe usarse los días 6 a 10
      • Tenga en cuenta que, si bien los estudiantes pueden regresar a la escuela en persona el día 6, siempre que cumplan con los requisitos de DHEC, los estudiantes no son elegibles para participar en deportes hasta después del día 10.
