SUMMERVILLE, S.C. Wednesday, May 3, 2023 – Chief Melcher is a long-time employee of the Town of Summerville with 23 years of dedicated service to the community. His career has progressed through the ranks of Summerville since being hired in October of 2000. Chief Melcher was promoted to the rank of Battalion Chief in 2016, and then again to Deputy Chief of Administration in 2019. He was promoted to his most recent position in November of 2020 where he is the Deputy Chief of Operations. This position assists the Fire Chief in supervising the operational personnel whose primary responsibility in the department is emergency response. Work involves performing functions and operations to efficiently handle fireground and related emergency situations; ensuring safety and supervision for both the firefighter and the citizen on the fireground; and performing specific administrative functions as assigned under the area of responsibility. The Deputy Chief of Operations also acts on behalf of the Fire Chief in his absence. We are delighted that Brent Melcher will take the lead as our new Fire Chief. His expertise and leadership experience will add greatly to our existing talented Summerville Fire staff, and provide expanded vision and perspective as we move into the future.
